Every year many young people go online to verify their Canadian student visa. Apparently they want to study in Canada. To study in Canada, you basically need to obtain a Canadian study permit. In some cases where the duration of your course or study is less than 6 months, you will not necessarily need a study permit.
However, it is important to obtain this study permit before moving to Canada. The reason is; If you decide to continue your studies in another program, you will have to leave Canada and then apply for it. I’m pretty sure you don’t want that stress.
Here’s the catch; If you have your Canadian study permit before you move to Canada and it expires during your stay, you can renew your permit in Canada. This obviously saves you a lot of stress and money.
For those who are duly registered full-time students at an accredited university, the study permit can help you work at your school. Also, you can work off campus or even as an intern at a company in relation to your main career. Very important, having a study permit can help you stay in Canada after your studies and apply for permanent residence.
Canadian study permit application process
There are basically two ways to apply for a Canadian study permit. One is applied online and the other through a paper application. Instructions on how to do this can be found on the Citizenship and Immigration Canada website, CIC. The online application is super fast. Using the paper option requires approximately 2x the duration of the online option.
If you choose to apply online (which is faster), you will need to prepare your credit / debit card for online payment. Additionally, you need electronic copies of the required documents at your fingertips. The immigration office in your country will inform you of the necessary documents you will need. These document requirements vary by country location.
How to get a Canadian student visa
Step 1. The first and foremost thing if you want to obtain your Canadian student visa is to obtain a formal letter of acceptance from a recognized university in Canada. This does not end there for students looking to study in Quebec. The government must issue the student a certificate of acceptance, also known as a CAQ. All of these requirements can be obtained online, so no problem.
Step 2. Upon completing the above, the next step is to obtain the Canadian Student Visa Application Package. This can be obtained from the CIC website. Alternatively, but it is not recommended to visit a Canadian visa office or the Canadian embassy in your country to apply. The latter takes longer and can take a lot of time and energy.
Step 3. You will be asked some questions about biological data on the CIC website. These questions will let you know if you are eligible to apply or not. You must answer correctly to get your student visa application package. DO NOT enter wrong information there. Make sure everything you enter is verifiable.
Step 4. When your questions have been answered and you are eligible, you will receive a personal checklist code, valid for 60 days. This checklist code is what you will use when submitting your application online. Be sure to print the page containing the code and have a copy of the software for later reference. This page will also include a detailed application guide, an estimated application fee, and a list of crucial documents that you will need to submit.
Step 5. Create a MyCIC account when you are ready to apply. This is where you will enter the personal checklist code provided in step 4. You will then receive the personal documents checklist that will allow you to upload and submit your documents to CIC. You will need a printer or scanner to do this.
Step 6. This is where you submit your request to the CIC. Before shipping, make sure all documents are ready and you have paid taxes as well. If everything is checked, go ahead and submit.
Step 7. It depends! Some applicants may be invited for an interview at the visa office of their country of residence.
After application, what will happen?
If your application is approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) cover letter, while students from countries that require an electronic travel authorization (eTA) and / or temporary residence visa will receive them if required. The eTA will be linked to your passport. It is important that you travel with the passport that you used when you applied for the study permit. The eTA will be valid for five years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
Present them along with your passport, proof of your finances and letter of acceptance (and any other documents they have recommended you bring) to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) in Canada, which will issue your Canadian study permit and allow you access to Canada.
